She possessed a skilled eye that naturally led her to experiment with photography. Barb was a gifted artist who tragically passed away in 1987 after a life-long battle with Hodgkin’s disease. The event took place at High Line Brewing in Inglewood and was broadcast live. Paula never shied from playing anything unusual on her show and that day was no different, showcasing a series of local improvisational and experimental musicians. For my part I performed John Cage’s piece 4’33”, a not very radio-friendly 4 minutes and 33 seconds of silence. Paula seemed a little taken aback at first to the idea of broadcasting silence for almost 5 minutes but that passed quickly enough. She always filled her show with music and sounds that could be experienced nowhere else. At the end of the Cage piece I destroyed a 12-string guitar that I had rescued from the City dump. It was decorated it with the colours of the Ukraine flag as a protest against the insanity of Putin’s murderous war on the sovereign nation of Ukraine. Sadly, Paula passed away in February of this year.
